What do you think of this new laptop?
http://www.gateway.com/home/prod…
It seems to have a lot of great features fo r the price. Also, is it better to have an AMD 64 or a P4 with a higher Mhz?

don't know man, my buddy had a gateway and it complained about it all the time. Support is really bad too.
- version30
screw gateway, all the parts are refurbished
- nLHb0
get a mac
hehehehe

any 64b processor is faster than a 32. clock-speed doesn't matter at that point.
apples and oranges.
clock-speed isn't the best way to compare proc power anyway.
i've heard bad things about gateway.
for ~1500 you can pick just about any notebook. personally, i would avoid gateway boxes.

Thanks, I was looking at a P4 3.3 and wondering what the difference would be between that and the AMD64 2.4.
"any 64b processor is faster than a 32. clock"
Does that only apply when using a 64b application?
Anyone know another laptop comparable in price and specs?

Looks fine.

if PC, Centrino or Centrino2 is teh dope

If you're gonna buy an "off the shelf" PC laptop look at Toshiba or Sony. I have always had Toshibas and have always been good to me. If you've got the cash, check out Alienware.

well, that's the hitch with 64b proc's...windows doesn't run 64b natively. yet.
they just released their 64 version.
it runs in 32b legacy mode. which is pointless.
wait...here it comes....you knew it would....linux runs native 64b.
i built a screaming amd64 box with gentoo on it. made me cry...so fast.
:)

BTW, do you think the 64mb video card is good enough for the newest games?
- sparker0
probably not. but, you don't get anything more on a notebook unless you buy alienware...and that jacks the weight, price and power consumption way up.
personaly, i would never buy a laptop to 'replace' a desktop. a laptop is for portability. anything over a couple of pounds, an inch thick and bigger than 14" display isn't my cup of tea for a laptop.
but, that's just my opinion on it.

These look good. Pretty similar specs to the original one I posted.

Check out Thinkpads, okay most people think they are ugly but they are slim, geared up with centrino and I have found them to be quite nice.
I sorta wish I bought one or a toshiba instead of my powerbook.

i'm also looking to get a laptop. had it narrowed down to 1 toshiba and 1 sony, both p4 3 ghz...then i found out the battery life is only like an hour and a half on both of them, and they run hot, and they are loud. i guess that's the main reasons why the newer machines are only coming out with almost exclusively pentium m chipset. kind of bums me out. i don't think a 1.6 ghz machine is fast enough for what i want to do with it : \
- sparker0
pm centrino clock speeds are different than p4 or amd chips.
a centrino 1.6 runs comprable to a p4 2.x.
again, clock speed isn't everything. there is more to a processor than ghz.
and battery life on a laptop with a desktop processor and hardware is nothing close to an hour. it may last 45 minutes at optimal conditions.
battery life varies depending on what type of work you are doing. writing to the harddrive uses more power than sitting idle. processor intensive applications like graphical prog's, games, etc will drain the battery faster.
like i said, laptops are meant for low profile work and portability...they're not desktops.
photoshop, illustrator, 3d apps, games, etc will kill the expected battery life.
even with my linux system configured for less writes to the drive, cpu scaling and screen dimming...idle gives me maybe 2+ hours...working gives me an hour or so.

Look At emachines lap top
I think its a better value.
- lvl_130
thanks for the info sparker.
yeah i guess i want something that doesn't exist. i wanted a machine capable of doing photoshop and flash work that i could take on long road trips. i also didn't want to have to plug it to recharge every other hour : \
shit. i guess i could pick up a second battery assuming the cd drive is swappable

(Apr 26 05, 14:19)no offense yurimon, but i have never heard anything GOOD about emachines other than they are cheap. i guess you sometimes get what you pay for
- NegativeSpace0
What you have heard is true, those things are pieces of trash.
- sparker0
lol. emachines are the new black.
yea. it is sad. i would love a laptop that went 5 hours or so without recharge and still allowed me to do what i need to do.
but, currently technology doesn't allow it. maybe one day. energy cells are getting better.
