the magazine house used gimp, scribus and open-office to publish its 4 publications.
games? unreal, doom, half-life 2, tribes...if you like fps.
3d? maya and such have linux versions....most started on irix unix. blender is also a great app.
i'm not saying it is always 'better,' but there are certainly apps adequate for the job.
like i said, it's a matter of choice. i've seend the benefits of using linux in many different situations, and have never been let down.

in the end, the only way to determine if it's right for you is to read up on it.
here's a little article with 10 reasons to switch.

we turned a bunch of machines found in the trash into email thin clients at a satellite office. they were free, and they've been running for weeks without a hitch, yay linux!

sparker, you're a network admin or some other nerdy bullshit. of course linux seems intuitive to you - but give a copy of red hat, osx and windows to the retired couple down the street to install, and see which OS's they manage to 'figure out'. when they go to compusa to find some edutainment software for their 6 year old grandkids, or when they are purchasing a printer and are looking at the back of the box to ensure the simple do-it-yourself photo editing software will work on their computer (usually only windows/mac compatible). that's just one of many demographics that i could point out that would be totally lost in a linux env. it's a powerfull OS, and has it's advantages - especially as a web server, but your tired windows hating rhetoric only serves as an example of your closed-mindedness in the field of technology. either you need to spend more time looking into other technologies or learn to argue better.

In visual effects linux is pretty much used as well - using windows over there is plain laughable.
