I have a friend, who would tell you that he is extremely religious.
he also likes to have sex with girls that he meets in bars.
I told him he was no more catholic than I am jewish and he got pissed at me.

I see, that makes sense. I know a couple of dudes, dad is X-tian and mom is Jewish and then they let their kids decide. You had to go to synagogue as a kid?

I went to temple now and again, my grandmother was extremely religious though.
the thing about the midwest is that there arent that many jews, so noone really ever knew, to this day many people I have known for years dont even know. Its not that I am ashamed, I just see it as being irrelevant.

I gotcha' I think my great grandfather practiced Judaism in Germany, but wtf do I know. Is it relevant today, to me now, nope, so just like you it don't matter. I just respect it and move on.

AFAIR you're a Jew only if your mother was. It's a very practical rule. They assume one can never be sure who the father was and there are more chances the mother is not a fake.
