You could use DHTML and all types of nutty code like this site http://osx.portraitofakite.com/
But unless you want to spend 14 years learning that and another 34 getting it cross browser, crack open a timeline and start keyframing.

why cant you guys be nice, cant you see hes new? To answer your question, most people dont even know how to use flash appropiatly... they use flash to accomplish effects that can easily be done in a regular web language, but they lack the knowledge. So yes, there are many websites that are "cool" that dont udse flash... just look at most of the flash portfolio sites out there and mimic some of the effects using javascript/dhtml/css.
