here in brisbane (oz) more and more companies are taking their design inhouse. not just hiring designers but actually just buying the CS Suite and fucking about with it. a '...we aren't paying anyone so it doesn't cost us anything..." kind of mentality.
is this occuring anywhere else in the globe or am i sitting in a global puddle of shite?!?
discuss pls.

it's happening in melbourne too - but i think the need for external designers is still very strong here.

not so much in san diego. lots of independent studios and freelancers here.

lots of freelance in sydney

in general freelancers are cheaper than employees so costs couldn't be a motivation.

yeah i know but for some reason a few companies i know are going the mentioned route. i guess it's cyclical. in a year they'll realise that they can pay someone one weeks wage to get a whole project done professionally and trouble free rather than soak up a fulltime acccountant/manager/secretary time for 3 months.

It happened here in the UK many moons ago when applications like corel came out. Companies hiring kids who did "Design & Communication" at School or getting one of the girls in the office to "have a go" at putting together a brochure.
It's difficult to say what happens because there are talented "creatives" who have no formal training or qualifications.
This diy approach is usually the attitutde of small businesses.
They seem to either plod along for years as a small business, or go under.
Problem with deign/art is that it's subjective. One persons cool is another persons shite!
The only advice I can give is - Stick to your beliefs - and try to seek like mided people to work with.
Simplified: shit attracts shit!
