I am guessing production generally pays low.
I am not really reffering to print work but rather everything from HTML, XHTML, CSS, Flash, dynamic server side sites etc.
I think maybe this type of work doesn't apply in the same way as I can't see someone doing all the technical work getting paid less.

That sounds more like developer type of work, more $$$$

Design and production are two totally different jobs. A designer would do well to have some skills in production and vice versa, but by no means are they the same thing, and in no way is it a good idea for an aspiring designer to begin their career in production unless it's CLEARLY understood at the outset what their expectations are.
And production artists are not the lowest on the ladder - if anything they are on a different parallel ladder. Our studio would be in constant crisis if it wasn't for the incredible skills, expediency and organisational abilities of our production guys. Most of them wouldn't touch a design job if you put a gun to their head, they like their well paid, non creative jobs just fine thanks.
Some days, when I have a bad caase of designerrs block, I look over there and think "that'd be the life".

masking, retouching, mounting prints, etc

yeah, maybe we should state what "production work" means to each of our studios. Like i said earlier, i'm given a tiny as thumbnail and have to make it happen. we put it together from start to finish including clipping paths, color correcting/retouching, layout, etc. we also make our own mockups, dielines, etc.

you let interns do retouching and masking? They must be really good interns.
- mayo0
we haven't had any interns here since i've worked here, but when i was in school, a girl i knew interned here and she said they didn't trust her with anything. So she just surfed the net and did homework all day.

well what else would they be good for?

i am a production worker. i am also the creative director....
and i also serve a mean cup of coffee every now and then.

actually, I was talking to scarabin, mayo. =) But you just confirmed what I've thought -- that interns are usually barely allowed to do any meaningful clean-up work, let alone masking and retouching.
Exception: I had an internship once where I was actually allowed to be art director and production artist on a few projects. It was awesome.

(Apr 12 05, 16:04)it depends what level we are talking.. there are some studios i know that made an art out of retouching. it's not like everyone can do it.
but in some cases (for cheap catalogues and such) it's not as crafty..
- scarabin0
they generally do basic retouching; the designer using the asset decides to what degree he wants it worked and how
where i work there's nothing else for them to do. they can prepare assets or sit around and do nothing
we have office chicks to handle all the paperwork and everything

My production manager is actually the one who does the hiring. He told me that he turned away a lot of people before hiring me because they were designers and, especially if you're fresh out of school, they want to make sure you know how to create a good clean file before they set you free on designing (though we are small enough that you may do both). I was lucky that I actually enjoyed my production classes and said so in the interview. That and my catalog experience were what initially made him hire me.

sometimes when freelancing I get down on the production side but then when I do the math that usually 2/3 to 3/4 of the billable hours so... its all good
