I just found out Friday Morning that 3 of my designs won awards from the American In-House Design awards.
YAY ME! But thats not why I am writing... In the package that came with the awards there was a letter saying that they would be printed in the "Graphic Design: USA" design annual (get this) for $250 each!
Does this sound right?
As a relatively young designer this is the first real national recognition I have gotten but I dont know if the cost is an industry norm or a scam.
I realize the value of having a design (or three) in an annual, I mean thats where I go when I am stumped on a direction to go on a project.
But I don't have $750 and my boss already said the comapny will not pick it up.
Any help would be very appreciated.

Do some research.
That sounds like the old scam where you pay to send slides to an "art gallery".
Supposedly I guy I work with knew someone who did this. Technically he had space to show art but it wasn't a reputable gallery. He charged people to send slides for consideration.
The point is. Do some research first. Get your hands on one of their publications and call previous winners or something like that.

nah, it's quite common that you have to pay to be a part of an annual in this field. just as you have to pay to submit work for most major award stuff. crooked world.

If i remember correctly, Graphic design USA doesnt charge for there magazine, they get money from the advertisers that advertise inside it..... Maybe its just a way for them to get more cash... Contact several designers and say they won awards, just to lore them to their van with prmomises of candy and puppies. Nice work though, but it sounds like a sweepstakes scam. Anywho, Pay for one of them, who, knows, maybe youll get more business from it , and the $250 might not seem like all that much.

AS for the validity of the awards I think with GD: USA's new creative direction they changed the name of the award but you can see the call for entries here...
But I really appreciate the effort and honesty.

Scam, I also won three awards but don't even show them on their site.
But why don't you contact them, probably they can sent you the money directly.
