ah, at least not every one is doing crowns... yet.

Thanks for the responses all. Keep 'em coming. I'll have to start implementing some of these fads. I couldn't possibly have thought of 1/10th of them on my own so I appreciate it. Currently what I've got is a colour scheme of white background (well blank canvas), homosexual pink, small amounts of rich black and shades of grey for text. I've chucked in a black and while silhouette of Che Guevara (...*wonders how many of you own a Che shirt or badge*.... :P), a 6/10th of a circle with a rainbow stroke and a line that runs across part of the page from horizontal to 45 degrees back to horizontal. I need to chuck a stencil in there (or make Che look more like one) and maybe some graffiti. I might get a few mock-ups online when it's coming together and call for suggestions on fonts etc.
After reading the slew of replies I'll be sure a deer and crest make their way into the image along with all the other stuff that I've already forgotten and will have to go back through replies to find.
Thanks loads. I love you all.

agentfour - what I was trying to say is that the source of these fads (trace the fad back) before 123klan and digital artists were using this, it was already a pretty much established trend in other areas of design, painting, and art. This was adopted from early tagging/writing using a fat-cap which ofter produced results like the dripping splotch. I think the element became a novelty or writing just like the vowel-less / words and pixel graphics became a novelty of digital design. Likewise, it's intresting to see some street artists like the space invaders dude, trying to reproduce pixel art in the real-world... http://www.space-invaders.com/
To my knowledge it was McGee who first started coloring his work with this element (spray and drip) most recently... other artists in this genre helped it proliferate by using it as well... eventually it was picked up and recreated digitally but the fact it was done with vectors says little to me as it is at heart the same element. If anything it says that digital artists were looking for a way to make thier work look urban and gritty.
This wouldent be the first time either... David Carson is a good example of trying to "grunge" up digital and print by some of the fonts he designed back in the 90's.
Anyway, I post a few just as refrence for people who may not be familiar with McGee and this type of style:
Kinsey
Old novelties often make strong trends. I'll be surprised if CGA color schemes and dot-matrix printing don't make a comeback soon. The rebirth of ascii porn into the mainsream, etc.
With pattern based printmaking in textiles becoming increasingly popular, ascii pattern / embrodery doesn't seem too far off... someones gonna do it.

Potato prints and blow-paintings never seem to go out of fashion!
The bedrock of any education in mark-making.
It doesn't matter how the mark is made. Question is - What's the motivation for the mark?

Unevenly cut pizza is begining to become a trend...
All the hottest parlors are cuttin their slices with square tops (almost rectangle shaped slices).
I think the trend started when citizens couldent make up their mind between getting sicilian and regular slices... so it's the best of both worlds.

Your constant pizza jammerin is making me hungry

bk_shankz ,
It's no secret that the mere use of the word pizza will make someones mouth water and tounge twitch.
Pizza is one of those rare foods who's name alone will stir the appitite.
Pi - To pique the curosity... the alluring aroma of a fresh pie making its way though your nasal cavity and into you glands.
izz - sounds like "eats" and that exactly what you do once the tempting smell has overcome your senses...
za! - you excalim after you finish a few slices, still savoiring the flavor of fresh tomatoes and warm, tangy cheese.
Pizza!

You sure know your pizza, pizzaman
Tonight I hope to study pizza too

Maybe I can make you hold out a little longer?
Pavement Pizza!
Another cool "urban" mark which never seems to go out of fashion!
In the UK (more northern areas) there is the chips & gravy window wash and the doner kebab scrub!
- randoman0
Your talking about "Street Meat" and I'm assuming this "Pavement Pizza" you speak of is a variant of just that.
pizza is a very general thing, but just like anhy other food, it's not the same wherever you get it.
Street Meat (street vended hotdogs and assorted meat) is a deadly plague that has riddled our streets like the violence of a gunfight for many years... I shall hope that Pizza does not take a similar turn to the worse.

Pavement Pizza is "slang" for vomit.
From a distance - it has the appearance of...
While were on the subject of "urban" marks vs food - there's those cool areas of dots left by chewing gum.
Random patterns made by accident!
In movies like "seven" where they use the UV? lamp to uncover, forensic evidence etc.
Interesting how the marks have a chilling way of describing the violence!

evolution in any of the arts (which design is but the dim pale shadow) comes from some very original mind. only 1% of people are able to do that, and most of them are worried with mathematics or literature and not graphics.
- stem0
Too True!
Also the trouble with art is that it is only viewed as a signle "subject", as a seperate entity.
All "subjects" are interwoven and it's funny how people have trouble getting their heads round this!
I'm not having a go, because this attitude comes from our education system (UK) by the age of 13-14 you life is mapped out.
Steve is a plumber
Dave is a mechanic
etc. etc.Heaven forbid anyone who dares stray from the path!

I showed the design to my teacher today and got some feedback. I can't be arsed explaining a few elements that are there for the purpose of gaining marks but as far as the assignment goes, the image is looking about as good as it can to meet all of the marking criteria though it's far from a masterpiece. Still, I'm happy to get the marks and leave it pretty much as is for the assignment. This is where it's at (be aware that going from .AI to .PNG8 has killed a little contrast and also made the transparencies a lot less subtler (especially along the bottom) but you'll get the idea:
Thoughts, comments and suggestions (to pursue with the image after it has been handed in and marked) welcome.

Should add bicâ„¢ scribbled type that looks like a stamp.
