I never went to school for formal graphic design training, so I'm looking for the best possible typography book I might get my hands on.
Any suggestions?

"A Type Primer"
John Kanehttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
He was one of my professors at school. The book gets you started on typography pretty well and teaches you how to properly use a grid.
Recommended.

Thinking with Type
by Ellen Luptonit's certainly not the best typo book ever, but it covers all the basic fundamentals you'd learn in school if you don't know it.

yeah definitely a tough call if you have to pick up just one.
I have also heard great things about the Ellen Lupton book, covers alot of the basics.
One of the above books, or even David Jury's "About Face" are good to get you started, and then look into Rober Bringhursts "the Elements of typographic Style" later on for reference. Even though it mostly concerns book design its still a very good book to reference for lots of projects.
Carl Dair's "Design with Type" is another good one.

Theres a link to some of the books I own, can try looking into a few and reading the reviews on Amazon to see what meets your needs the best if that helps.

I am reading the Dutch version right now and it is very insightful on many many levels.
