The hard part is not making it, it's planning and estimating what is possible in the time frame.
working by a fixed animation time a day makes little sense to me because a certain 5 second scene can take more effort than maybe the next 40

the bigger richer studios have a special kind of geeks, managing and optimizing, render layers, lightning, shaders, effects sometimes even cleaning up rigs and scripting from messy animators to increase the rendering speed.
i was almost such a geek, but i could escape ;)

btw youre raytracing in Mental ray right? or another modern engine, the default scanline in max was never intended for that kind of work.

bake some of your lighting into textures?

go buy another computer to help render it..then return it. (check the store's return policy). or borrow one from a friend.
i know freelancers that do that all the time when they are behind the eight ball.
