scarabin. I'd have given him an estimate with the figure. Itemizing each job. When you see the breakdown, its easier to rationalise in your mind. That price is about right. Dont forget to charge for laser proofs as well. $25 each.
If he wants something effective it will cost him more up front but the results will be much better. He could do it at kinkos for cheaper, but would anyone notice the posters and flyers? Would anyone be interested enough to keep them ? I doubt it. Does he think associating himself with low quality junk mail will be good for his career?
These are things to get him thinking about. And for the programs, i suggest indesign ;)
Maybe he is too cheap, but that's ok. You could compromise, feel him out but thats a slippery slope. Doing that too often will cut your freelance design career short quickly. You can't afford to work for less than standard rates and no one good will charge less. (so you can say, which is true in a sense. Your trying to build a sustainable business too)
Cheers. Best of luck

student designers = cheap labor.
i hate it when people think that. i had a chick one time wanting a full website plus branding and cards for 200 and "networking meetings". fuck that

i told him 600 for webpage ad, postcard, and poster, 300 for program
which is a full 300 below my initial quote and includes any reasonable amount of revisions

stick to a certain number of revisions......and then quote him 500

how much time do you think it will take you/? what is that worth? are you willing to do it for less an how low will you go?
make a plan on this for yourself. see if its worth the extra headache with using quark...
come up with a few different money figures and see how it plays into your life...

he's paying for printing, i'm just delivering the files
- scarabin0
his answer to my price was "whew, i dunno if i can do that, i may have to do the programs myself at kinkos or something"
which seems pretty stupid but i'm not stoked about doing a program anyway since i hate quark

so he wants it for free then...bassicaly..
- e-pill0
also are you just doing the art or getting everything printed as well?
- scarabin0
the $1200 i quoted him i just tossed up at the initial meeting, when he balked i said i'd investigate my costs further and get back to him, which i'm doing today

what was his answer to your price?

so this guy just made a one-man show which he's gonna be performing around hollywood soon and he needs promotional postcards (8000-10000 copies), programs (700 copies), and posters (200 copies). he seems to have his layout already planned in his mind, so it shouldn't be too difficult to design.
what should i charge him for this?
(this is in los angeles, and the guy is a wannabe actor working as a school counselor at my design institute.)
i quoted him 1200 for all 3 designs and he balked. i thought my price was reasonable.
what are your thoughts?
