What do these two opensource apps lack in your professional opinion. I know they lack alot, and to me are fairly unusable, but try to pin down exactly why.

on second thought, let's just talk about shoes or Terry Schiavo.

i would happily help if i used, and consequently, knew anything about the two.
i know what GIMP is. and i even installed it on all our editor's workstations back when there was a publishing house division. it was perfect for quick photo edits and such for the magazines.
but, i'm not a designer. i have no creditable input on the production environment workings of said programs.
now, if you want to know about linux kernel hacking...server administration...how to use ethereal effectively...how to build your own point-of-contact router...then i'll be happy to assist.
:)

oh, ethereal is much fun

i can say this, though, toastie...one thing that would help the development of oss projects like gimp and such is designers.
keep in mind, people like me...we're geeks and programmers.
i enjoy tinkering with hardware and code...we don't have the creative flow for images and graphics that designers have.
it's hard to write software when you lack understanding of the target audience.

I completely agree, sparker.

I hereby make it my mission in life, to combine my love for design and my love for coding in a divine unity that will be the next step in open source design software.

I might be totally wrong but is the one and only advantage of GIMP not that you can open 10bit cineon (Kodak 35mm) files and layer in 16 bit, unlike PS where you are restricted to 8bit for a lot of functions?
