Whats the best way to 3d a font? can you do it in illustrator? thanks.
- adamfinger0
I've heard you can do this in Illustrator, but I've never tried.
If you have access to any 3D program, it's really just a matter of importing the curves as EPS and extruding.

convert text to outlines, then -> Effect menu -> 3d -> ok, and then Object menu -> expand appearance
- rabattski0
sure you can do that in illy. there's also that kpt illy plugin for doing 3d stuff.
- elms0
ah yes, the KPT Vector Effects plugin is slightly better than Illu own 3D effect
- rabattski0
didn't know that illy had it's own 3d effects. could be that i'm still working in 9.
- elms0
could be. cs has 3D effects.

Illustrators 3d effect is rubbish cuz you can make either isometric and perspective 3d but not planametric (?) a la
- Beech0
That effect would take no time in illustrator you wouldn't use the 3d plugin for it either
- rabattski0
you could do that easily by hand as beech said.
plus that kpt thingythingthing plugin could do that as well.
btw this one's a lot nicer.

- rabattski0

Also swift 3d, you can bevel and extrude the shit out of it, then export as AI file.
- Beech0
haha yo damn right!
- shaft0
right on, rabattski ;)
Do you guys remember how crappy free typefaces were just a few years ago? I see more and more goodlooking fonts in places like dafont and not all of them have fkd up kerning in free version. Nice.
- motokiss0
i have that pluggin if u need it somewhere
- rabattski0
oh dude, don't get me started on the free typefaces. yeah they have become a lot better and there are more and more out ther due to it's obvious boring technical reasons but, and this is a big but, what also happens a lot is that people take an excisting font, rename it and put it up as shareware. like that bad mofo here, plenty of others, like banana which originally is candice etc. etc. now that's not proper.
- shaft0
but aren't those ripped fontfaces easy to detect and block rabattski? Or is it that these font sites just don't care? Don't they get phones from lawyers or something like that?
- shaft0
There's also a lot of 'redesigned' fonts. People who can't design a font from scratch take an existing one and make it grungier or play with cutting the sheriffs. I can't say it's all that bad even If I should. The results are often quite nice and people still have to pay to get the originals
