Hello, i am trying to sort out my design and illustration website http://www.bighappen.com , and i was thinking of calling myself an illustrative designer. As a trained as an illustrator, not a designer i feel less fraudulent, And it is an area i am trying to push my work in.
My question is does it sound way too pretentious?

I wouldn't worry about titles. It looks like you do an good job as both so I would just keep on truckin'.

why have two sites tho? why not roll them both into one?
- graymatter0
one is fine. there are plenty of designers that I know (including myself) who do both and have only one site that showcases all of the work.

Pick one... illustrator or designer. They can easily cross over each other.
I tend to stick with illustrator...

Cheers guys, It started off at college, we were told that when art directors commision illustration they want to see that your work always looks the same, i.e if they commision me as mybrokenshoe, thats what they want, silly people with long arms big heads etc. So when i started doing websites and 'design' stuff after college i made big happen to try and seperate my stuff so not to confuse people. Big Happen also allows me to do 'trendy' (damn i hate that word) and various different illustration styles, which i would feel would dilute mybrokenshoe stuff.
Hope that makes sense

nathan, your work is really cool. I like your characters. I draw my own from time to time.

Hello Ric
Yeah i love drawing characters, kind of cathartic (i think thats the right word?)
I was just having a browse around your website, some really cool stuff on there, i love the scribbles. Also the paintings are nice, i haven't picked up a brush since i left college.

I call myself an Illustrative Designer... because I do both & can't choose just one title. Nothing wrong with that, in my eyes.
Do whatever you want!

cool man, its been a few months since I picked up a brush myself.

Hi Nathan
I would agree with you there. Especially with Editorial Illustration. I ask this same question ( should I promote my design and illustration work seperately) to every art director i meet. Almost all say the same thing.
They are commissioning you to provide them with an illustration produced in the style displayed in your portfolio.
i would keep the 2 separate websites if I was you.

Hey Elliot, Yeah was thinking about it alot last night, I am going to stick with 2 sites, and on the predominantly design one keep the title:
Big Happen, Design and illustration, was taliking to me flatmates about it, who are also illustrators. They reckon illustratiove design sounds like i only illustrate, which may mean losing out on jobs, logos web, etc.
So mybrokenshoe, will always be illustration, and big happen - design and illustration.....
Would prefer not to have any label and just do what i fancied but everyone loves them pigeon holes :)
