we were told that when art directors commision illustration they want to see that your work always looks the same, i.e if they commision me as mybrokenshoe, thats what they want, silly people with long arms big heads etc. So when i started doing websites and 'design' stuff after college i made big happen to try and seperate my stuff so not to confuse people.

I would agree with you there. Especially with Editorial Illustration. I ask this same question ( should I promote my design and illustration work seperately) to every art director i meet. Almost all say the same thing.
They are commissioning you to provide them with an illustration produced in the style displayed in your portfolio.
i would keep the 2 separate websites if I was you.
