i see, hmmm, the only thing I'd be able to do I guess is fiddle around, but it sounds as though you're pretty much all fiddled out...
if you want you can email me a hi-res jpeg + the spot colours you're using and I could give it a shot...

snuggles, i appreciate the offer. i really do. classy move. but i wouldn't feel right letting you do my work...plus i might as well figure it out on my own...i'm sure i'll have to do it again someday and i might not have you available to do it for me!
thanks tho

you need to pull your black out of the midtones. on the curve beside your black ink, ad an anchor 20-25% from the top right and drag it down to the bottom, that should pull out all black until you hit the shadows.
or you could try a monotone image with a dark blue ink... looks like your image could almost be a monotone.

just reread your post.
the blue ink should have a flat curve 100% - 100% so it blends with the background properly.
then fiddle with the black (pull it out of the midtones, but maybe not all the way as I suggested before.

thanks monNom, I tried that - still no luck. plus playing with the curves i still can't keep my Pantone spot color can I?

don't use the duotone option in PS... make a grey scale of your image as a duplicate and then tweak it abit to loose some of the grey using your levels.
now make a selection from your channel and paste it into your colour file. now make a solid background of your light PMS colour and then select the new channel you made from the greyscale file... colour this selection with your darker PMS... taadaa, you shouldn't have that muddines you're getting.
just make sure you printer can handle doing an overprint like that.
