I currently live in Seattle but it has been my long-time dream to live in the UK, specifically London. Just a dream right now, but does anyone know how difficult it is for a foreign citizen to get a work permit there? Is it impossible to get into the country/ rent an apartment without one?

easier for you than for us getting a workpermit in the states

i'm thinking about move there my self..would be nice, and the best part is that i dont have to worry about work permits like i do here in the states...

"easier for you than for us getting a workpermit in the states"
Not true - it's jsut as hard. You will not be able to get a work visa unless you are a student. If you want to work out there you will have to have a company sponsor you to stay.
London is a great city - I miss it terribly - but it's bloody expensive.

Don't.

the grass is always greener on the other side. I worked in LA for six months and i would go back any day if i had chance. I've thought about marrying a lesbian.

Haha, try to find a US worksponsor, it currently takes about 6 months, at least...

So it's an impossibility unless you get a job beforehand...anyone know if it's possible to go there and live if you work for yourself? Is it not possible to get a place without a work permit? I know there must be people who get in below the radar...

Lisbon is also pretty funky, more than London.

ukit:
have any nationalities other than the US of A?
specifically Canadian or any other commonwealth would be beneficial
Commonwealth countries can get working holiday visas - I'm CDN and did one for two years in London. Spent that, but would go back if I had the chance...
Just a shot, but you probably would have thought of that if you had it...

"anyone know if it's possible to go there and live if you work for yourself?"
No it's not. You must be sponsored to live and work there or that's it - case closed
- ukit0
Nope, just US. This might seem like a dumb question but, what would prevent someone from going there "on a trip" and just staying? Would I get dragged away by the cops at some point?
- ukit0
OK, I guess Jevard's last post kind of answered that.

just bumping this because i happen to be in the middle of hideous bureaucratic work permit switching nightmare mode.
i tried to come over WITH A PERMIT that was not fully spot on correct and ended up being incarcerated and deported (so that "it's harder for us than it is for you" schtick is bollocks). and that just made it doubly hard to come back.
don't go messing with the home office, or you may find yourself banned from the uk for 5 to 10 years.
just, y'know, chucking my two cents with inappropriate vigour. as usual.

Don't mess - you'll get fucked - hard.
