the second one looks more aztec than spartanesque. i feel it would look cool if it was more cartoonish

I really appreciate the input from everyone. :-)
I think I am leaning toward the 1st myself (but it needs revisions), but the second seems more appropriate for a statesside school, and nods a bit more to their previous logo.

i think you need a few more concepts to flush out any weaker ideas. The 2 ideas you have are just variations on 1 idea.
I'm not trying to tell you how to work, but when i design something I at least try to show a few different ideas to the clients so they can decide which they like.
Not sure if the budget that you have will allow that.

The second one reads: SEASIOE

it's def getting there, ive found that my most successful logos always fit inside a circle (even if youre not using one) the positive and negative space relation

Damn- Ivan, your site is hot.

Super- Thanks. I was stressing making that "D" work with the grid.

why not try a couple more variations that are more angular. maybe break up the head piece into sections. maybe pronounce the brow and jaw a little more to give it a more aggressive look. like i said, it's fine for a letterhead, but on a sports uniform or helmet, those kids aren't going to get much respect. unless you were planning on developing a stylized variant just for sports usage...

john- man, i really strugled with that one, and to be honest, that seems to be the direction for most of the spartan / trojan logos out there. They were all very angular, aggressive, more detailed. but, all seemed a bit lacking and I could not put my finger on it. i decided to take a more simplistic approach. if for no other reason, to come up with something new.

ANY votes for #2 or does it get scraped?
:-)

i really like the idea of #2 although the head isn't proportionally right and typographically it's a bit not working here and there but for a school? dunno. a bit too punk if you ask me. all the info above: imho.

both are pretty cool but #1 is better :)

Perhaps the face could be changed to look more in keeping with the subject and not like something from iRobot
- ivan_cook0
hmm. iRobot?
- tny0
more forehead!
- thompson0
is taht VAG rounded?
- ivan_cook0
yep (VAG). thoughts?
most here seem to favor #1, but i'm leaning toward #2, especially with the rendered version.
- kld0
I like 2 in the renderings but the chin on tht guy is a bit weaselly.

Ivan, design it in illustrator... photoshop effects arent adding anything.
define a strong / hi-contrast black and white first. Maybe use the pen tool to get a more detailed trace of a guys face.
