I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight... razor... and surviving.

The trivia on that movie is mad:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078…most of them were wasted!

Indeed, the extended version is not that great. There's a scene where they come up on tiny French colony (Basically a mansion and some surrounding fields) and a long ass arguement with heavily-accented Frenchmen ensue, and then a prelude to a sex scene.
Tottally fucks up the flow of the movie.

Enter response: Coppolla's wife wrote an amazing and hallucinmating book about the shoot in the Fillippines -
don 't remember straight away the title but shouldn't be too difficult to find

when i was in high school, and i saw this movie, and i thought it was disturbing and really stayed with me i told my professor this and he said it was the most pretentious nonsense he had seen.
I saw it again two months ago, and realised he was right. It is most over cooked AND pretentious. Too much self-aware directing and each scene wants to blow you away. A bit like Stanley Kubricks clock-work orange like that.
But i have to say, there is a directors cut version (not the Redux) which makes much more sense and is a lot better. I think the best Vietnam movies are Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. I think Apocalypse Now (the one edited by the studios) misses the point of Joseph Conrad's novel. But it has some good lines:
Chef: A fucking Tiger! Never get off the boat! Never get off the boat! Never get off the Boat!
Martin Sheen: Never get off the boat. God damn right. Not unless your prepared to go all the way. Kurtz got off the boat, he got off the whole damn programme
Letter From Kurtz to his wife: Sell the car, sell the house, sell the kids, sell everything. It's over. I'm never coming back.
quality moit!

i get goosebumps everytime from the helecopters scene in the beginning.

The only people who say it's pretentious are those that like eclectic shit and make sweeping statements simply to distance themselves from anyone they deem low-brow.
Your basic "Hollywood sucks" syndrome.

The best part of that movie is when Sheen meets up with the French ex-patriots near the Cambodian border. That was a surreal section of that movie. And when he gets to sleep with that cutie French chick too. Ahhh smoking herbs in the woods of Vietnam with a French girl, sweating it out. nice
