I'm thinking about moving to NYC for work in the next 6 months to a year (from Portland)...wondering what people who've also relocated there have as far as advice: living, eating, sleeping, just general shit you know...
I considered trying to do 3 to 4 month stints, but I figured if I'm going to do it, I better just do it.

you dont have to ask people who only moved here from someplace else...being born here i go thru the same issues any non-native new yorker.
here is your advise:
get a strong and solid paying job where you will bank at least $1k per week. this is only said as if you can spare a full weeeks paycheck to all or part of your rent you will have no problem surviving in nyc.as far as eating is concerned, i hope you are fit and heallthy as food is located from every country and is on every block.
also try to map out a budget plan fo biills, sex, drugs, music, clothing, transportation, beer, dry clleaning, new gadgets, cell phones, and action figures.
try to keep this between $350-$700 per month.
do you have a place to sleep?
get bussy today in searching for a place to live, as most places in nyc are taken by nights end as the day they are posted...money talks!bribery will get you in an apt for 6 months, or a trust fund can also help you.
why 6 months? why not the long haul?
yes cost of living in nyc is higher than any other place in america, but salaries here, if you are hungry and stubborn enough to stand your ground is very high as well.
be tuff! get strong ankles! and good kicks!

Please Please Please, don't trust a roommate you don't know.
If you have to get a roommate make sure that everything is documented in writing, I had a roommate who took my rent and lived off of it, rather than pay the bills, etc etc wound up costing me way more to get out of that place and into a decent one. If you need any help email me.
There are so many people running scams up here, i went and saw an apt, that was a closet the guy wanted 1500/month paid tho him, not the landlord, for example

- rson0
I wouldn't move to jersey. If i was moving here from portland. The path sucks.

lol ... little gee you are the hippster
- jdcomba0
used to live in brklyn, if you work it right, path is way faster and cleaner than say the F train to brooklyn. just saying. also you get more bang for your buck.

lots of crackheads there?
- jdcomba0
sure, theres crackheads all over this fucking place. it's not so bad if you stay away from journal square. it gets a little to cracky over there at night.

If where to move from Portland and stay in ny for a few months. I would punk out and live in the city. Mind you I am a big fan of jersey and brooklyn.
