"My mate has his own Graphics for TV and Film company who are doing VERY WELL ie BIG MONEY and he reckons AE is shit!"
Anything will be shit, if you don't know how to use it well..
If you come from the design area and you are used to illustrator, and photoshop, I will recommend to start with after effects, get familiarized with it, Im learning it too, and I love it so far..
Any other software you choose to use, will be ok only if you can deliver a good product with it. I know people that use shake, and they suck, and Ive seen really good stuff with flash too.

these guys use flame / inferno etc... http://www.the-mill.com
some of the top people work there.

Just look at the hardware spec for Flame. Bloody hell, you need to be a millionaire to get one of them up and running.

a friend of mine works at a multimedia company and wanted to help me with VTC's and total training stuff for AE and Combustion. But do you have any suggestions for tutorials or resources concering this topic, broadcast graphics?

Sorry reaction I have been taught through experience and trial and error so tutorials I cannot help you with.
Yes all the programs I mentioned will work on the G4 /G5. 3D studio max is PC exclusive. Maya is groovy on the mac.
AE is fine and it is super easy to learn. Like what one of the people said it really depends on who is using the software. I use AE for nearly everything I am asked to do, because it is extremely quick and easy.
Situations that involve particles and complex keying rarely arise.
Sometimes I have to paint out sparkle and clean up pictures and I will use commotion for this.
Like what one of the people said it really depends on the person using the software.

I've been making the slow migration over to motion grapics too, might be getting my first real job in the area in a few weeks.
