I've been playing for 15 years. Acoustic and electric.
Hey mg33, my first electric was a Squier Strat too! Came bundled with a 15-watt Fender amp.

"thepod, what guitar did you get?"
answer: a black american telecaster. plays like a charm. my 80's hairmetal charvel/jackson is VERY jealous.

THX_1138, that looks like a helpful site. i will read up on stuff for sure. learning the instrument is definitely on the list of things to do this year - not sure how well it will go though.
the first step is buying a guitar. any suggestions?

only in the loosest sense of the term. want to get my first electric soon - does anyone know why Fender Jagstangs are so cheap compared to other fenders? Are they shit? There's a bright orange one on denmark st i've got my eye on...

(Mar 7 05, 03:32)I dont think anything made by Fender is "shit". Even the Squires are excellent for the price.
It maybe that the model you're looking at is Japanese or Mexican, rather than US made. Japanese models are the cheapest, and usually because they use cheaper parts and the labour is also cheaper. The craftsmanship is still great though. As with all guitars though - try it out. I don't know what make a good quitar - but the same model in one shop, could be so much sweeter than the same model in another shop.. Make sure it's travelled well. ALWAYS check the neck.
My other advice would be - don't buy from Denmark street. Overpriced. I know a great shop in Fleet (Hampshire) that you should travel too. 45min from London. Best shop in the South ;)

thanks moth, i've been told by someone else that d street is overpriced, but i've never seen a guitar i've liked in another shop and like you say i don't want to just buy one off the interweb without trying it out... have you got details for this place in the sarf? *prepares passport
