do you guys think its possible to learn guitar on your own? i've always wanted to but am not disciplined enough to hire a tutor and attend class regularly.
if it is possible, whats the best way to start? what should be my approach?

I've been playing since I was 8.
Played in bands for 15 years.
Still play every day, even if for only 15 min.

Playing since '93. It is the only thing that keeps me sane sometimes.
Slowly making my dream guitar. Took a Double Cut Les Paul knock off body (Hondo) and painted it myself. Gutted it and put in Gibson pickups from an SG and PRSesque hardware.

What would you guys guess would be the value of a '68 Fender Precision Bass...Sunburst, all original, one owner? I'm selling mine and am not sure how of range. I'm also selling my 60-something Ampeg bass amp.

I've played for about 13 years now. I have a standard telecaster, a reissue of a 56 Danelectro U2, and my first guitar, a 92 Squier Strat. Also an acoustic electric Epiphone PR5-E.
The catch is that I'm left handed.I taught myself for the most part. Took a few lessons at the beginning, but all this guy wanted to teach me were cover songs.
I think if you come from a musical background when you're young, you can teach yourself more easily. I played trombone for 3 years in jr. high and I was also in the choir when I was in private school. Started listening to stuff like The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, New Order, etc. when I was in the 4th grade - that all had a big impact on what I wanted to hear come out of my guitar when I started playing.Love playing guitar/singing/being on stage with my band or by myself more than just abou anything in the world.
For those of you who have never been to my band's site, it's here: http://www.theatlanticdivide.com… Songs are in the music section.

------------------------------abstrakt,
I used to tell myself the same thing, and used to be terribly frustrated that I was writing lyrics constantly and hearing them in my head, but couldn't do both.
It takes alot of pratice. TONS.
I would literally say that I spent my five years in college also learning how to sing and play guitar at the same time.
It wasn't until moving here to Chicago in 2001 that I ever played/sang in front of anyone. I did play guitar in a band in high school for three years, but never sang.Once you kind of get the hang of it, you learn ways of making the guitar rhythm the right way so you can sing with it. Sometimes straight downstrokes work best.
don't be discouraged, ever. :) I never thought I would figure it out and now it's just second nature. Not trying to toot my horn, but some of my solo songs I've played so many times, I can sit and read the closed-captioning on the tv at the same time. Unfortuatly, it was often on Oprah.

it's definately do-able. If you have an ear for when it's tuned, you can figure out songs you like and start hacking.
is a good site for learning song theory, chords, scales, and muscle dicipline
check out the 'lessons' and the 'basics' sections
