if you were a perfectionist you wouldn't be using IE.

If you were a perfectionist you'd use more than one browser

I showed you an example now get off your pedestal.

gentoo is good. it's source based, so expect to a) learn a bit about how linux actually works and b) spend quite a bit of time installing.
on my notebook, gentoo took around 36 hours to install, that's including kde.
source based distro's like debian, gentoo, arch, etc...compile everything to work with your exact system. so, an example...you want to install kde...you type "emerge kde" at the command line and then sit and watch as streams of compile lines scroll up your screen.
it's not hard or scary...you don't actually do anything...the compiler does all the work..it just takes a while.
gentoo was the only distro that i was able to get my internal centrino/wifi shit working with seamlessly.
there are native linux drivers for the ipw2200 wireless nic...so, once i installed them and edited the config file i can boot into any wifi network and surf.
i spent a day at a panera in overland park while my fiance spoke at this conference. i managed to get a lot of work done thanks to wifi.
wifi is one of the trickier parts of linux.
if you're completely new, try mandrake or fedora. if you actually want to learn about linux...how to compile your kernel to fit your hardware and boost performance...can't go wrong with gentoo.
just remember, right now there aren't any ports of macromedia or adobe software.
although, adobe has started a linux/oss branch of their company.
:)
linux photoshop...mmmm.
if you have more specific questions or need help when you make the switch...email me, i'm happy to help.

how about:
http://www.reebok.com/Static/useā¦
and
http://pixelgasoline.com
and
http://fes.jfn.co.jp/the reebok one runs slow as a dog, but still runs, the 2nd one causes the browser to lock up and force quit, and the 3rd one is slower than fat albert running a marathon. this is with FF on my G5 1.8, 1.25gig ram
your mileage may vary obviously, but shit... slow as ever

I have no idea whats going on with Slashdot for you but it works fine for me (and others), on a mac and PC... so that example is mute.

by the way I do use more than one browser- just never IE unless I am cross checking work..
- sparker0
again, for me, all those sites took under a few seconds to render and they seem to work just fine.
obvisouly this is a mac flash plugin issue...it has nothing to do with the browser itself.
macromedia needs to fix their plugin.
- DonnieTV0
There's my shadow...
So you do use IE then?
- jpea0
oops, sorry
i DID mean to say that flash on a mac in FF sucks.. not FF in itself.. i rock it every day and things all render completely fine on FF for pc (including all flash)
- tomkat0
that news site, with all the colored squares.. damn dont know the link.
the one that gave you an RSS overview with all headlines..
that was slow
- bgheen0
ProteinOS?
- cloned0
all sites worked fine in my ff

What bugs me is that feekin Java plug in.... Waiting for that bitch load sucks ass... but that's the same in any browser.
- sparker0
i forgot to mention, though, about the compile time for gentoo...i only use stage1 installs.
that is the "from scratch" install.
stage2 and stage3 install like fedora or mandrake. they come pre-compiled to work on "any" system and include software like window managers (kde, gnome), office, etc.
those take far less time to get a working system up.
the "which distro" argument is just as zealous as any mac vs. pc, firefox vs. ie, art vs. design debate.
in the end, what works for one user may not work for another.
but, then that is the beauty of linux...choice. i prefer gentoo. my colleague prefers fedora.
you can have it either way.
and hell, if you don't like either and you're a good programmer...roll your own kernel and system.
that's why there are 100+ distro's out there. people make changes and offer up their version.
- jpea0
agreed.
and it's usually only for some lame text ticker or some shit like that

The reebox site does run slow, pixelgasoline ran fine, a bit slow at first but fine in the end- and the last site was so annoying I left before testing it all.
For one thing, all of these sites are bloated designs.. nothing usuable about them, the designers assume everyone is running a T3 line. I can see these being slow on ANY computer-
Maybe I have no problems because I tend to stay away from sites like these- all flare no substance.
- jpea0
the last one has tons of substance. seriously, a pretty cool site.. info organization tightly wrapped IMO
- sparker0
that's because sun's java engine is bloated and, imo, poorly developed.
i just installed solaris 10 on a test server here in the office and wasn't that impressed.
i can only hope that linux and mac os x server kill sun off.

I use IE to check my work to make sure all those fools who use IE can see my work. Other than that- no I haven't used IE to "surf" the web in over 2 years now.
