i think this has been discussed before...
but my 2 cents is that before the itunes store i wouldn't flinch about downloading a song p2p from limewire, in which case the artist got absolutely nothing.

artist still make money in more diverse ways now days with endorsements apparel concerts toys and such

cloned. the day my band starts selling action figures of ourselves, then feel free to rip fellow musicians off on p2p. until then, buy your damn music.
yes, artists make more money doing gigs than they do from the cd's. but if you don't sell cd's, you don't pay back your advance, and then you're really fucked.
