The problem is his ideals are not always practical. Hell, they're hardly ever practical. They're just ideals, and they should be used to temper the other extreme: over the top Flashturbation.

i admire the fact that he tries to make the web more accessible. that's noble. however, the web doesn't have to be boring, dull and uninspired to be accessible. different target user groups require different approaches, and what i don't like is that jakob neileson lumps everyone who uses the internet into one category. thats a fundamental flaw, and thats why i don't agree with him and his notions of usability.

C'mon guys face it USA is about showbusiness, Hollywood has own stars (read: CLOWNS) and web has a clown too, in Jakob Nielsen... so it's kind of entertaining. Though some of things he says are correct (but again things he says aren't purely invented by him), his total lack of vision, negligence to accept the change make him sound totally pathetic most of time. So, most of the people who really have been into web design for a long time think of Jacob Nielsen as idiot (which is true), but to the people that actually don't know about it he's a smart guy, the definitive guide to the web.
He plays "hated genius" role... uses a lot of stupid quotes (at times sounds like "murphy's laws") to make him sound more proffesional and convincible to the companies who pay for his mediocre consulting. And I really think he has some sort of anti-design complex since it really looks he enjoy the role. I think he's totally aware of stupidness he talks at times.
But anyway, the point is he is making a good money of selling shit... so actually he's smart.

I really don't give2 cents of his guides since I know what are the true guides.
But for certain people would be good and essential to read some parts of his recommendations since in today's web there really are a bunch of websites with total lack of usability.
That brings us to the art of web design; balance between technology and usability...

Jakob IS a nut and he should never ever speak again about usability or design. However, I find his comments extremely helpful & on the money for clients who want to shoot their wad of content onto the site.

Here's the reason he gives for having no graphics on his site: "Download times rule the Web, and since most users have access speeds on the order of 28.8 kbps, Web pages can be no more than 3 KB if they are to download in one second which is the required response time for hypertext navigation. Users do not keep their attention on the page if downloading exceeds 10 seconds, corresponding to 30 KB at modem speed. Keeping below these size limits rules out most graphics.
I am not a visual designer, so my graphics would look crummy anyway. Since this website is created by myself (and not by a multidisciplinary team as I always recommend for large sites) I didn't want to spend money to hire an artist."So he's stuck in a time warp and he's a cheap bastard.

Hard to explain; conjuction of: user understanding, imagination, technology, web standards... and yet usability:))),... far more complex than Jacob Nielsen's nonesenses.

alright, I have to chime in here cuz I just can't resist.
I think Jakob takes things to extremes, but there's a hell of a market for taking usability to extremes. When you're a mutlinational and someone proves to you that you'll shave a 5bytes off each download of each page of your site and youre site recieves 5B visitors a year then that translates into serious money.
I think everyone misses the point that he's not talking about your buddies indie band site that's nothing but tricknology and flashturbation. He's talking about corporate design.
(Although you're buddies site could stand to be helped by some of his comments.)
Also, I find it funny that so many people in here consider themselves designers yet they scream anarchy when they have to do anything within guidelines that profess order and clarity. WTF? That's what design IS.
I've mentioned this before: usability IS design. Accessibility IS design. If you can't design something aesthetically pleasing, or exciting, or subtle, or fucking off the hook without going outside the boundries of usability and accessibility then you need to evaluate your skills as a designer.
It's a poor carpenter that blames his tools.
Now, with that said, JK needs to chill a bit because he takes things very far. Although he's arguments about accessibility for the disabled are very relevant when working on projects for GOVs or NGOs or the such.
And, it also depends on the target market of the site. If you KNOW your target market warrants the tricknology then go nuts, but if you don't know, and it could hurt your clients bottom line then design your way out of the conflict.
In the end, your clients bottom line == your paycheque so don't fuck with it.
