i have and use regularly
lightwave
3d studio max
maya
autocad
and
and
and
swift3dit renders nicely without having to be a lighting and shading expert both in vector and raster images
all the haters dont know how to use it or something
rhino is nice ive seen friends use it but i dont want/need to learn another 3d app now
- chossy0
clone it might be an idea to highlight why you would use each one of the programs you said so that Tara can get an idea of the strengths of each one and she can get a more clearer picture of what does what. :)

clone,
rhino is so easy, it took me 2-3 days to pick it up. just like all the other 3d programs, once you understand the foundation of it, they are pretty much all the same.

It all depends really whay you will be using it for/ what the studio uses.
Generally 3dsMAx is great for real-time apps (though i use it for everything)
Maya is used more in film. and proclaims to be the easiest to learn.Zbrush is great for making bumpy creatures (and normal mapping for real-time/advanced stuff)

Photoshop :D
I hate 3d programs! they make my head hurt. Then again it might help if I actually took some classes or something. I used to have 3ds max and bought like a half dozen books on it but never really got it to work the way I wanted it to..

will do
lightwave:
it was my first 3d app, i know how to use that fucking modeler like butta'3d studio max
great texturing and bumpmapping, way easier than lightwave in the detail regards to use and get results
[this is the program used to do the 3d in the eminem mosh video]maya
really good at open field renderings like outdoors or space any wide open area [as compared to say inside a room]autocad
this program is great because it is hard to use and extremely detailed. this is the industry standard for machining and prototyping using SLA machines the tolerances are -/- .0015 thats right 15/10000th of an inch [your eyes cant see the difference]swift 3d
web stuff animations vector rendering and as mentioned earlier it gives pretty good results pretty quickand i forgot 3
infini-d
kinda old but FOX still uses it and i know a guy who needs my help sometimes so i keep itbryce
landscapesposer
people and animals and the ability to write animations like walking and such which are savable and transferable to other models assuming the bones match but thats another threadthis image was modeled in lightwave and rendered in swift 3d

if youre inventive enough you can also use adobe after effects for 3d appearance

do you use flamingo and penguin with it as well or by itself?
- stevii0
clone, why learn every single package. Are you actually good in any of them?
- tkmeister0
i use flamingo while i am doing concept design, but i can never get flamingo to render the way i want for the final.
so i use 3dmax or form-z. i have maya on my machine, but never use it.
i used to be really into doing realistic renderings, but now i totally lost my interest in it.

because i can

the funnest part of 3d work nowadys for me is product conceptualization and cartoon effects like those seen in futurama
-that 3d team has the easy job

While every program can do the same thing, I prefer XSI.
I learned Max in class, but switched to XSI when my job required it, but I love the workflow. Mental Ray is a great renderer, but it will NOT produce great results quickly. You need to tweek it. If you are interested in creating photoreal work with little work involved, go with Max.

i like modeling more than rendering
my life is boring all the work i do is to client specs i never express myself anymore this industry can do that to you thats why i made the tank. i referenced some schematics that a friend of my dads at boeing had in his persoanl collection. its a german tank the second of a series developed during ww2
- stevii0
where can I see your work clone?
- tkmeister0
i hear you.
i started with autocad over 10yrs ago, then to more realisic rendering 3d max, formz. 10yrs ago, it took me all night to render a house with texture mapping and reflections. now it takes 15min or less. it's crazy.
3d requires different level of brain activity. it's intense but when i see the result, it's much more satisfying than web.
now i just do concept modeling, not too crazy about rendering. and i want to get all the details right in 3d as well as in dwg.

my site, pixeltwins.com, is in the middle of moving a client so go there now and you will see gnn.tv instead due to dns changes. however visit it next week once the gnn migration is complete and click 3d in the portfolio. for now there are two up that i posted earlier in the thread
