what about lightwave?
- toastie0
i don't like lightwave, though i know some people that like it alot. IMHO, it's somewhat weaker than the three abovementioned apps, and i never liked its UI

cinema 4D is good as well, quite easy to use

Cinema 4D and Lightwave

blender is nice. open-source, free (as in beer) and works on linux and windows.
steep learning curve, but i like the interface.
i messed around with some cell-shading in it for an architecture project once.
pretty cool.

also Wings, a free modelling app.

hi-end 3D;
LIGHTWAVE + ZBRUSHvector/web 3D;
SWIFT 3Dnuff said.

standalone Swift3d is a joke, though it works nicely as a plugin for other programs.

lol @ swift 3d
- sparker0
i played with an old version of swift. never really go into it.
but that's just me. i'm not a designer...so, i only get so much out of certain apps.
maya, studio max, lightwave, etc...are great...but so expensive. too pricy for just a hobbiest like me.

blender is really nice, but I'm still highly against its UI, though ive gotten used to it. I only use it on linux, really, since im a big max fan and use that when in windows.

havent heard of blender before, checked out the gallery on the website, some of the work standards matched the high end 3d apps, interesting...

have any of you used swift v4? u now have full poly-manipulation - but honestly, it is THE 3D app. for the web - use of any other program isn't really practical for the web, thats why I stresswed HI END/ WEB in the previous post. reeeaaadddd

i dunno about swift3d. :)

blender is a step or two behind the major apps, imo. but, it's still good for someone like me.
i like to relive my architecture days and play around with building, city scape, etc rendering via autocad and blender.
like i said, i'm definitely not a designer...so character modeling and such are way beyond me.
i used autocad and blender to render my office and network topology one weekend...just for kicks (let the geek jokes begin).
:)

Swift3D standalone is crap. The plugin version is much better...but it's only worth it if you're interested in rendering out vector files.

rhino is very good as a quick 3d sketching tool for product design and what not.
it all comes down to what you do with it. not everyone need to use maya, alias, 3dmax. all products have pluses and minuses.
