those who used to work for someone else and then switched to freelance, how did you make the switch? did you just cross your fingers or did you build up a lot of clients beforehand? how did you balance both regular work and freelance before you switched?

I've got a part time job that pays my rent and I squeeze in freelance the other two days (and weekends plus evenings) doing my freelance shiznit. currently looking for fulltime work in a big(ish) company to see how the whole process is meant to work , then take everything I've learnt into rebuilding teh freelance as a fulltime job. well that's the ideas anyway . oh lordy

been doing my own design thing now for about 6 months, but just accepted a fulltime thing from one of my old boss's..
wants me to start up a design dept. at his new company...
which is basically the same thing he hired me to do 6 years ago at his previous company..
that went incredibly well, right up till the owner (not my boss) sold the company to AT&T Canada...
after that, things went kinda sour...and most of the old crowd either left or was laid off...i hung in there till this summer, when i finally got my walking papers...
then, low and behold, my old boss starts up a new company, hires a bunch of the old crew, and things start rolling again..
at first, i wasn't going to go, just because the freelance thing has been working out incredibly well for me...
but, then he offered me a good salary, i'll be able to bring in all my clients (and keep em for myself) basically, i can set up a really decent design dept.
just couldn't say no....soooo
the freelance ends this month, and i'm back to fulltime...
still tho..
i can't believe how amazing my luck was with freelancing..
it's good to know...if i ever have to go it alone again.
:)
