vancouver is a pretty sick place if you go to east hastings, crack addicts walking around like zombies, and they are EVERYWHERE. police just hang out watching for trouble but they can't do anything about the junkies shooting up on the streets because there are just so many of them. it's sad :(

i saw someone get almost shot in the head (guy missed by an inch on purpose) about 5 feet away from me on hastings. my friend and i ran and a bunch of crack heads started following us. it can be dangerous there, trust me. although i know compared to like chicago, washington etc it is like a kids playground

I got mugged in Regent Park about 2 years after I moved to Toronto, but I was so drunk it may have been a 7-year old girl for all I know...
Toronto has a couple bad areas, but like greg said, no where near the ghettos in the US.

Scarberia is a little dodgy and it seems things are moving more towards the downtown, more shootings lately in the centre of the city, but there really is no need for it. There is so much opportunity in this country for people of all nationalities, it's a total cop-out and just plain stupid to think you need to be living the ghetto-fabulous life in the t.dot.
