I did a favor for a co-worker and built a website and designed a logo for his company site. I billed him at 25 dollars canadian an hour and it cam to about $1700.
He is now saying im am trying to rip him off.
What is a standard rate for for this type of thing?

You didn't agree a rate/fee at the start?
That's just silly,
- dippy0
depends on what the website looks like.
j/k. ;) $25 an hour sounds fine, but this story just goes to prove my rule of thumb: never do any "favors" for people you know unless you're willing to do it for free.

We agreed to $25 hour, but hes just trying to get out of paying for it. Ultimately if this has to goto to small claims i have the evidence to win.
Im just trying to figure out a good number to come back with when hes saying that im trying to rip him off

25/hr is what grad students make doing stuff on frontpage... so yeah its totally reasonable. throw in flash, php/sql, css/xhtml work and thats a steal for him.

If you find the GDC salary survey from a year or so ago, $25/hour is right at the bottom of freelance hourly rates, if memory serves.

25/hour is very damn reasonable for the chap, but it took you 68 hours to complete the site? really?
- fate0
That's like 2 full work weeks, every day devoted to this project.

no pay = no website
that simple!
don't negotiate with him, you are on very low salary as it is!

when it comes to so called "friends" like this...
go to a template site- buy one for 40.00 make a logo in a half hour and charge him 200.00
you gt what you paid for.
- Neuarmy0
it's actually around $30, so you're spot on with that hourly rate.

do you have a link to your work so we can make a more educated assesment of your being paid?

$25/hour can.?! that rate is insanely cheap. I didn't read the thread super close, but that just sounds ridiculous...especially if someone is going to try and say you are ripping them off ?!
hell no. tell your 'friend' to pay up or be prepared to go to court. good luck.

When your working for mates you gotta charge a reasonable ammount. $25 dollars is fine but you should set a cap limit that you both agree on right at the start, no more than $1000 CAN or £500).
When you reach that you should tell him that you are now working for free so he should sign off ASAP so you can get back to fee paying work (or pay more if he wants more than is reasonable)

Tell your pal to cry you a river and pay up....

I took the site down, and sent him a letter. As for the amount of time, it was dragged on over a month or two and he kept making changes. The work didnt bother me but now that i have quit i want my cash.
thanks for all the info guys
