The reason Graphic design is in this mess to begin with is because of US. You see it all the time in this industry. Design companys undercutinting eash other. Pepale working for no money just to get a foot in the door. It a fucking JOKE, but noone is larthing.
And most busness peaple think creatives are morane when comes to the money. They play us agesnt eash other and larth about it. This is just one of the resion I am getting the hell out of advertiseing.

That is the reason why no, we shouldn't.
Should doctors lower their costs for surgery?

Blo,
I think that an option would be to get designers to get paid by public funds for the better of the community they live in.
Of course these designers should be chosen by a professional design association in order to assure that the chosen ones are indeed "good".

waynepixel, it happens in every industry. it's called a free market. everybody bids out jobs to different vendors looking for the best deal.
this is where brand comes into play. an established brand sets a standard of quality and charges accordingly.
frankly, i could care less if society benefits from design or even notices it. they are going strait to wal mart for their goods anyway.

nice idea, i'm sure you wouldn't mind your taxes sky rocketing non, looks as if your in the USA, so considering you live in a country where even healthcare is up to the individual, i doubt very much anyone would fork out public service design.

Its not about where we are from or where we are, its all about what we're doing to make the place we are at better. It doesnt matter what our occupation or political affiliation is. I think government supported design is a great idea, but I imagine it would be among the lowest priorities in any government.

non,i con see your point, but itd not happening.i've been working now for about a year, and i if you see what hours i put in make less than a wellfare beneficier(or how you call it).
nut for my freelance clients i refuse to charge much(they are beginning bands etc...).
but as for my regular job(big monster clients) i asked my boss to charge them as much as you can.before this job i worked at a company that always went under the price of the otehrs.man...the deadlines where so tight i had noghtmares and went to work with a fear i only can compare when you are nine year old getting bullied by everyone at school.and believe me i 'm not a slow desigenr.i always worked fast and good.but i never want expreience that again.

I think the results that different design studios can produce should dictate the level at which one should pay to achieve those results. For instance, say you can take a product that no one has heard of and turn it into a highly profitable seller both on and offline... is that not worth the extra cash? Lowering your prices does nothing but short change yourselves. I would strongly advise against this.

it's already happening. look at the losers on Elance or whatever the hell it's called. some kid with a laptop in whatever country is willing to create an identity package for peanuts. they devalue the work and effort that it takes. commoditization of our profession is not something I like to see

T-Rock has a good point.

fresnobob....
it is about money.
if I employ ten talented designers there is a bottom line number i need to make to let them keep their jobs. or i have to layoff people (or they quit)
in an ideal world where money did not exist.... sure.
just cause we lower our price, doesn make the price of my mortgage less.
or FICA or health insurance or food at the store
Im not in the business of ripping people off, but im in the business of staying in business.

To the people who responded after my last post.
Here is what I wrote before. I guess you guys didn't go through the whole thread so I'm going to make this easy.
"Ok, to all people who think that this is a joke thread, or that I am advocating cheap design, I AM NOT JOKING and I AM NOT ADVOCATING CHEAP DESIGN.
This is just an issue that made me think. What would happen if good and effective design was made FREE so that our society could benefit from it? Would it change the way the majority of people see design? What kind of impacts would it have on our communication habits?
Now don't start talking about the price wormhole issue. I am not speeking about the financial side of things, more of the social impact it would have on our society. "

I believe that something like that would obviously have serious impact. probably a good one if we speack strictly socially.
economically? a disaster, for sure.
there is overpricing in design? most probably, but it happens in all sectors. lowering prices and being more honest with our work and needs would definately prove a better situation.
wethe that's possible or not. i guess it's just cheap idealism
