i don't get that kind of reaction from people because people first get stuck on what my company does.
people: who do you work for?
me: blah blah blah company.
people: oh, what do they do?
me: they do blah blah blah.
people: ...................................
me: it's like, they do this and that.
people: oh, but how?
me: well, like this.
people: oh. (still not getting it).the conversation never reaches to the area of what exactly i do for this "mysterious" company.
and this "people" include my own parents. they think i sit in front of multiple computers, doing stuff. which is more or less accurate.

I have the same problem of what to tell people. I start with where i work. If they are still interested I tell them what division I work in, then the department. In the off chance the person is actually interested and following me to that point I describe what my department does. Then when they ask my job I say I surf the net all day...

I usually say I'm a web designer and developer for a company in (insert city).
The response is almost always either: sounds like you're doing well, you must make a lot of money or that is a really hot field right now.
I think maybe the word developer makes it sound more important.?.
