I just use the term everyone else around here uses... "a creative".
Its funny how people say it tho... like its a different race or something. "Oh, hes our creative".

If you ask someone who works in insurance, they don't generally tell you what exactly they do because you wouldn't give a toss anyway, and i doubt they care if you're a web designer or a graphic designer.
- tkmeister0
what do you do?
why? it's none of your business.
seriously, i don't wanna tell random people what i do.
- vespa0
they're not offended kStyle, they're just being witty (in a geeky way)
we feel your pain...
- vespa0
haha that's so true Blofeldt - they think that if they give you the "oh you're a web designer? i made a website in word last week!" then they are relating to you and you'll like them!

you could say
'yeah, your little sister figured it out? that's great. it's not hard to do .. it's just hard to do well. i love it.'
- ricstultz0
I never use the term graphic designer tho... cuz just like others said, you get, "Oh, my son does some of that computer stuff... he's pretty good too."
- Blofeldt0
I always say to insurnace people, I FUCKING LOVE INSURANCE ME!
- chossy0
I say 'I am a TV editor, I make programs and stuff'. Then people generally don't pursue it. I have to say people tend not to be that interested in what I do.
- kStyle0
I must be confused...
they probably act interested so they can get in my pants
Thanks guys!

what all of you are missing is the fact that people aren't really thinking about you .. they're thinking about themselves. by saying - my son does that - they're just trying to impress you. not belittle you.
so just be a fan of them and they will in turn be a fan of you.
that's why humility is so popular.
'really? maybe your son can stop by and give me some pointers!'
makes them realize you don't take yourself too seriously and have confidence and are probably very good at what you do.
no need to prove yourself to random people.

...if yer a pretty girl chances are that is it.

when i was leaving my bank job to come work at the studio i'm at now, a lot of my bank customers (many were cute little ol' ladies) asked what i was leaving to do. They never got it when i said "graphic designer." They just couldn't understand that. So i started to say,"I'm going to be a therapeutic interpretive dancer for the blind." they thought i was such a sweet girl for helping blind people. They'd even pat my hand sometimes.

i am proud to be a creative, it is a different race, we get special rights, right to wear pajamas to work, to leave the office for hours "to get inspired" and best of all nothing we do can be "wrong"

i generally say i work for a charity. a) it's true and b) it helps me to garner the admiration of that whole mother teresa market.
but "propagandist" is nice, as well.
- mitsu0
professional puppy, kitten and nun rescuer.
'works' every time.
- ricstultz0
propagandist... I'm using that from now on.
