I took some aikido and then switched to aikido roots, Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu because aikido is usually trained in a very ineffective way. Stopped about 2 years ago.
If you want it to be real world effective quickly, take BJJ. For fitness, take aikido, you'll sure learn doing stunt breakfalls and will be still in one piece when you're 50. It's important, most of these arts exploit your body and make you a wreck as any extreme sport taken professionally.

rex kwan do! :)
naw Andy, I forgotted any kung fu i learnt. I can only remember a couple of holds and like a kata. So if i get faced with a guy and need to use my kung fu i'd be like
"ok, ya wanna fight? Safe, just gimme a second" *adjust my feet* "now stand to the right, yeah, move your foot forward, and now like come at me with your left hand towards my face.... but slowly"
nae good to no one!

numberoneson I was looking into Escrima and Kali yesterday. is it a hard or soft style? Isn't Kali the style that they used in Bourne Identity? Can you tell me a bit about it and what you like and don't like about it?
I always wondered how styles hold up in real life situations and thought Kali would do well against an unskilled attacker. Would all styles do this? My concern is that if you find yourself in a confrontation that you couldn't get out of without defending yourself and the attacker is street brawling you - would your years of practice suddenly leave the brain or would it be there for you as 2nd nature? Also what if you years of training you find yourself stuck in some rhythm that is off balance in a real situation causing you to trip up.

Poppa - you'll be suprised how quickly it becomes second nature and how useful it actually is

i have been practicing various styles of yoga for more than two decades now.
imho, some of them fall under the rubric of martial art.
that statment seems counterintuitive to many people (it's conceivably just a question of semantics), but it all depends on what kind of war you're fighting.
get me?
so, namasté, motherfuckers. and watch your ass.
*that last bit was tongue-in-cheek
*the yogina in me wants to be very clear about that.

yesterday i was having trouble opening a jar or pickles.
so, as almost second nature, i quickly karate chopped the jar in half slicing my hand and spilling pickles and the juice everywhere. great pickles though. kosher.

I wanna learn Krav Maga.
I hear this is supposed to be the shit... used by security forces all over the world, developed by the Israelis

watched a kung fu movie with the girlfriend. after i walked into the kitchen to get a glass of water.
i hear a shriek from the living room and run in to find her pointing to the love chair screaming 'a spider a spider.' it was huge. so with the spirit of kung fu running through me i for some reason kicked really fucking hard to kill a spider. well. i broke my tiny toe on my right foot. nothing can be done about that except pain releavers and a few months of babying it. so stupid.
k0na_an0kare you sensing a pattern here, kOna?
