Cali totally wins. NYC is only good for a couple years, then the crappy weather, bad smells, and occasional criminal run-ins wear out. Plus it costs waaaaaay more than even Cali. Trust me, you don't need the extremes to know how beautiful it is. You have a point on the food thing, but that's only if you stick to SoCal, LA sucks for food, and for life and people in general (so fake and can't get a good steak). Go Santa Barbara north and you're in good hands, same with San Diego area.

I don't know about the give or take 10-15 degrees thing anymore.
Last week we had torrential rain and mudslides.
This week we have summer-like weather.
Also, Cali=cheap rent. You get a roach-infested shoebox for $2000/mo in NYC. BUT, it's a hell of a town. I won't argue that.
We have good food too, but you have to drive for it, like everything else.

apples and oranges.
I was born and raised in Northern California, and have lived here all my life. I'm moving to NYC next week.
love them both, especially the haters.

please - la is the worst waiting in line for hours to get in a place to hang out with all the tools you were waiting on line with.

i just moved to the OC from NYC. It's really difficult to compare the coasts. They are completely opposite. NYC is great when your single and Cali is an awesome place to settle in and raise some cubs. NYC becomes totally impractical to raise a family and chill out. The NYC work hard- play hard lifestyle can only last so long and then you burn out. So come move to Cali when your ready to settle down.

I have been bi-coastal for the past 8 years and this argument comes up way too often. Fact is, you really can't compare the two cities... they both have pluses and minuses. NY is the quintessential city, a walking city with a surprise around every corner, which might be a crazy ex-girlfriend. In NY, I find myself missing the peace and (relative) quiet that LA affords. I actually have a house with a back yard for about half what I pay for in NY. There's also a bar on every NY corner, which is good or bad depending on what time you go to bed. In LA it's hard to find good food, true, but if you know where to look... another thing like about LA. And these days there are more quality NYers living in LA than NY.

Worst thing in San Francisco is the 'mild' weather...make up your mind so I don't have to run my 'cube' heater.
Food is killer, people are amazing. Lots to be accomplished on foot and with public transportation.
Graphic designers seep from every direction around here..it's very odd.

im an LAer through and through. i can handle sanfran. but i cannot do new york. its a nice place to visit i suppose. i need to back soon for sure.
my mom grew up in NY and we still have a bit of family there. but still, there is something about LA that i really like... besides the fact that my family is only an hour away (another plus of course).
i'll probably live a few more places before i buy something most likely. but unless i find some new city thats truely unbelievable, i think LA will have be back eventually. you can be young here and have fun... you can also settle here and have a nice life with your family. and well.... you cant hate on how much industry and money comes through this town. LA handles a lot of capitol and when the going gets rough, it seems LA is a lot easier to handle than any city on the east coast from what i can see.

LA rules, but it's the place people love to hate.
The food is better here than most other places and we actually have fresh vegetables.
There are many assholes and cheesy folks here, but they are everywhere. But please everybody, don't come. We don't need any more traffic. It seems many New Yorkers come anyways, I'm sure much more than the other way around. :)
