mayo...i am a computer backpack designer. i would honestly say that the designs where the zip opening into the main compartment against the bag is a poor construction for the back causing problems for shoulder strain and upper back muscle pain and discomfort. be careful when purchasing a backpack that will hold your laptop. make sure the inner compartment for the laptop is padded all around and has a space of at least 2 inches between the bottom of that pad to the bottom of the bag.
great backpack companies that make urban storage travel bags are:
Dakine http://www.dakine.com
Clive http://www.clivebags.com
Swiss Army - http://www.victorinox.com/
dakine bags are designed for the consumer on the move with a sense for design and innovation, some of their bags have dope hidden pockets! e.g. a hidden back pocket on the back side of the case with hidden zippers, dope! i own this one, it has molded compartments for mp3 audio players and camera/ mobile case.
good luck!
oh tomorrow i can email you my companies catalog, we can make a trade perhaps...

Thanks brandelec, but i have a 14" iBook and the ones that would fit that are not backpacks.
:(e-pill, that would be great and thank you for the great advice. I'll wait for your email. I also have a question you might be the ideal person to ask for a friend of mine.
