they should make a law to purge all 56k devices and upgrade the world to broadband for the sake of web designers...
... and while they're at it they should purge monitors still at 640x480 res

flash is not a large file format what is janne talking about?
images and sound cause flash to grow. the entire anise site swf is 42k and draws in text and image files externally
the pixeltwins site uses the same technique but xml and the swf is only 34kb
as far as JG_LB statement of under 10 megs i hope you are involving video and audio content because the political site i built to suit was small enough to fit on a floppy disk twice and it was 7 pages with images
sounds like a few people here need to learn thier trade more efficiently

It really depends if you want to FUCK dial-up users over.
At best, a 100kb page will take a 56k user 20 seconds. 500kb 1 minute and 40 seconds. I generally try to keep the poor bastards in mind as up until recenly I lived in a city which only got some form of broadband internet in late 2002 I beleive.

Big is when the site is disappointing in relation to the time spent in that obscure preloading activity - in which the most hideous thoughts and feelings start to take shape and you rise from the dark and pronounce in some forgotten phillistine dialect: " i tell thee, this is a fucken big website."
