what are the sizes of most home-pages these days , is 300k too much 400k? does any one here still have dial up , you pigs
- imakedesign0
erm... thats seems very very big.
i aim for under 30k 4 my 1st page

if you know what you're doing your entire site depending on content can be under 10 mb if you don't have any flash
- quamb0
thats crazy talk- sure if your audience is nt style folk, go for the 400k+, but the rest of the world aint on broadband

"target audience". General public is still hughely on dial-up and generally max here is about 60K. If your audience are high-end designers you can go for 120K or something (this is all html talk). Seems most people using flash now days don't give a toss as long as they can entertain with a preloader. With Flash I usually like to display some site content within 120K regardless.

pigs?

yeah, call people names and expect some help at the same time? no way dude.

I aim the initial load to be about 50k max and then stream imagery in seperately...
Our website is a bit bigger than that, but things change, and so will that :)
- imakedesign0
how are you making sites that big?? if you really need to load content on demand not all at once.
- janne0
i have made a splash for a client that he demanded and it simply cannot become any smaller then 150kb..
should i stand in the corner now and feel ashamed?
- imakedesign0
yes, yes you should
- JamesEngage0
150k is fuck all really... depends how good it is though :)
- janne0
i might be able to make it smaller but i am waiting for client-feedback now..
i'll let you know when i am done with it.

dial_up?!?
Soooooo last century.
But sorry for those of you still stuck there. I've had broadband since 1999!
- janne0
well there's still a ton of people (mostly senior citizen) who use the internet only to get some information they really need every now and then.
and i know quite a few people like this and they are simply not interested in taking an extra account for broadband, even when it'll cost em no more then 19 euros a month.
if you are aming at a very wide audience, or just these people specifically try to avoid flash, javascript and big files in general.

it depends on the audience and the content.
google's site will never be very big, but a graphics firm will tend to be not very small.
1.figure out content.
2.figure out audience.
3.figure out audience's user pattern(i.e. what they're likely to click on) and optimize accordingly.
4.build the site.
that's what i try to do.

broadband has now crossed over the 50% mark. 400k is a little large for the landing page.

i always aim under 100k and the load image, movies, text and whatever..
and i find flash site being more 56k modem friendly than html sites because it alot easier to control what is loading and not
- imakedesign0
hey designererror, did not know you did that threadless tee, wearing it now ;-)

the reprint or old one.. ?
don't like the grey one too much, and they don't ask you if it's okay when they reprint.. bastards ;)
- imakedesign0
