That's such a hard question to answer now-a-days.
You could either charge an hourly rate or charge a flat fee. It all depends on how good a friend you guys are and how experienced you are.
It also would depend on how detailed the site was going to be, and what technologies you would be using to create it...ie. Flash, ASP, PHP, CSS, etc.
There are so many factors involved that you can't just ask someone how much to charge to do a website anymore.

problem is that a mate is a worse client than an anonymouse client so id charge the same, for a straight 10 page site with design and search engine optimisation £2000
if theyve no money i'd say ill do it on the weekend but they need to know that as its in my own time it will take a long time and there will be complications because they cant afford daytime designing...
so if that was the case anything from £500 upwards (excluding hosting)
