bonseff needs a 2nd opinion..
here's the skinni, maybe a long preface if you can hang..i work in a design group of three. thers a mkt director, a print designer and myself.
the director and print designer handle national ads for various interior design mags, which include photoshoots and styling.
long story short, the owner isnt happy with the look of the ads they produce and brought in an outside agency. they produced 1 ad already and its wack, but since they have name recognition the owner is like under a spell or just crazy.
so the 2 i work with are hurt and want to split and work for someone else. they asked me if i would come with. it's all lined up it seems
thing is, if they split i get more rad print jobs on top of what i do already. and the company is growing leaps and bounds.
i really like the two i work with. we have a real solid dynamic. i dunno what to do...

sounds like a tough one, but fresh air always clears to mind! maybe it's time for change

Do these other two co-workers have guaranteed work if you join them? Would it be less money (including benefits)? If you left who would take on what role in this new venture?
Are you hurt over what your owner did? Sounds like they overreacted. I would stay were you are, afterall if they left it would probably put you in a better position in the company you are at ; )

i say make your decision based off what makes you:
1. happiest
2. the better designer
3a. secure in your job
3b. the most money(i think in that order)
personally, i would stick with/goto the job that has you working on the coolest stuff. (or stuff you like) and that gives you the most freedom in your design

Go for it, you can always get another job. Just keep moving, learn new things etc. any company that wont use internal designers and get outside 'help' in, isnt worth sticking around for.

there are no guarantees if i split.
id really like to start up a small firm with them. we're good enough as a team to rip it up.
but if i split it would be to work WITH them, not for the director and definately not for the director under another owner.
but the director is growing a side business and doesnt want to invest in another side business.
its tough. it could be cool, but maybe i should wish them well.
i hate thinking and sighing.

go with your gut homie, and good luck.

hmm r u worried the guy you work for now might just outsource everything if those 2 guys leave?
- BonSeff0
no, im not at all.
its actually a woman owner.
i think there is a woman taste thing going on there that i cant understand maybe...
- BonSeff0
cause its all interior design stuff

i'm with kezza – go for the out. go for the bigger cash always (if the work is similar in quality) – you can always do your best work anywhere, lift the standard on your own.

my post probably won't be much help in deciding BonSeff. I'm always scared of not being able to find something if i leave or lose the job I have now (not that i plan on leaving). *IF* things don't work out if you were to leave, how's the market in your area? I would probably stay and see how things go. If they get unbearable because your friends/workmates aren't there and things go downhill, you can look for something else then.

Seff that does sound tough. Leaving sure sounds interesting to me - especially if you have a good relationship with the others. Defintely go for what builds your book the most or makes you happiest (whether that's money or freedom). Do you work lined up with these guys if you split?
- mrdobolina0
BOnseff, can you stick around for a month or so after the other 2 leave and then join them later when the situation is more secure?
- mr_snuggles0
Do whatever is best for yourself and for your portfolio.
It's scary but it sounds like there is some security with the new venture, so it's not like quitting your job with nothing really lined up [like me!]
- BonSeff0
I like your idea dobs..
We are gonna sit in on a meeting with the outside agency in about 20 mins. should be interesting..
- mrdobolina0
hang your wenis out of your zipper during the meeting. haha
- BonSeff0
so we sat through the meeting with *them. The owners expressed views on their ads & brand in the meeting they never mentioned in the three years we've been with the company..
brutal.
So after everyone left i went back to the office and chatted with the owner and asked what was up. She said her husband didnt like the photographer we use. (he fancies himself a photographer)
I asked if we could submit an ad campaign too, and she said sure. but i dont know if its worth it now. we worked so hard to build their brands up
- mrdobolina0
damn bonseff, so what do you think your next step is?
did you hangout your wenis like I suggested?
- BonSeff0
haha! no.
i dont know what im gonna do.
that other opportunity is a couploe months out, si i guess ill sit tight. im working on a few cool projects right now to keep my mind occupied. but i am gonna start going to work baked again i think
