marriage vs creativity

zombie made me think of something..kids help inspire creativity...they see things we miss.
on another note personal projects no longer become a priority...unless they involve your family (which helps greatly). I do sideline work and my wife and kids (two teen step-daughters) know that when I have a client job to work on, that takes priority over a trip to the mall.

I don't think a creative block has anything to do with marriage. Sounds like a wacked out justification to not getting married. Everyone reaches a creative block.

yeah, zombiewoof, but having kids decreases your IQ nonetheless:

Sort of. My wife thinks the computer is a "idiot box", that was until I got her an ipod for Christmas. Now she want us to get an imac g5 so she can download music.
Go figure?
Other then that - marriage just limits that time that you get on doing things like designing at home and definatly music at home. However, the creativity is still there - I just need more time.

I disagree about kids hurting creativity. Actually once they are grown up a bit (2+) they can be totally inspiring. Kids know everything, adults just slowly f*** them up with our preconceptions, self important knowledege and bigotries.

Congratulations, sputnik!
It's funny cos my wife knows almost nothing about design or print production, so she just lets me do my thing. (She takes care of me in other ways, though...)

sorry to hear spix. not sure which is worse. i guess its the difference between ripping the bandage off real quick or doing it slowly. except in this case the healing can come only much after.

yeah it sucks...but I dont know what is worse...living toehgter hurting eachother or just split up and have more pain but for a shorter time..

i'll be married this saturday, but we've been together and very close for 3 years.
my creativity has NOT decreased whatsoever. he is interested in what i do and it inspires me...adding inspiration to all the other stuff that gets me going.

i just did not have time working on my own stuff outside work once I got married...but it seems like I will have alot more time soon.

I have only be married two years, and am still dealing with this dilemma. My CG work is fine, if not better (career oriented). In my painting and expressive work, i cant draw on the old loneliness/isolation/sadness that i used to, so i am trying to reinvent my source of inspiration. This has been really fun and interesting, and i think is actually maturing my work in a good way.
What is most difficult in my opinion, is just having someone there to peek on my progress, which is a private thing to me. its a mindfuck knowing that she'll want to see the progress of the new painting. (must not work to impress, ever)

lots of things change when you get married (speaking from personal experience). as long as you are able to adapt to the change, there's no reason why you can't be as creative as you were.
i'm interested to know how many married *women* there are on NT.

it depends on how supportive your spouse is. my wifey is behind me all the way, so she understands when i spend a lot of time on the computer when i get off work..
shit, she's the inspiration for a lot of my work anyway. so, for me, marriage hasn't fucked with my creativety, it helps sometimes.i would imagine that kids will royally fuck things up tho...lol

Well by nature marriage forces you to use creativity in many shapes and forms on an everday basis to keep things fresh.
I think work/design-wise I haven't suffered at all, plus my wife is also a designer so I definitely get inspired by her and sincerely hope we can work together more in the near future.

just being in a relationship kills my creativity. i am guessing that after marriage i'd have to become a professor.

i think if both work in a creative environment it could be worse..
i love to have my gf being a manual worker stuffing chickens fat the factory down the road..
it makes me feel so creative.. u know

Lou Reed released Blue Mask the same year he got married and it totally saved his career.

I would guess that it's actually the amount of time spent being creative that diminishes, not the creativity. You tend to spend less time doing work when you have more important things in your life...
