ever have iTunes tell you that ur iPod cant be read, and needs a restore? Almost sounds like this "Oh hmmm, seems like your iPod is, well lazy, so I'm going to have to tell you to restore ur iPod ummmmmmm k?".
$300 for this?

yeah it happens.. you need to do an update of the software on the pod, and possibly a system restore... sounds like a 3g.
i've done it 2wice in 6 months with my 3g...
i was once caught in a loop and it caused great drama... had to wipe and reinstall.

Yep, been there, done the restore (thanks apple tech support) and it turns out it was a firewire card problem so I've had to buy a new firewire card and have to redo all my music at some point.
Still, a good excuse to clear some of the dodgy stuff I'd accumulated!

Yes, for weeks. Finally put a firewire card in my PC and the problem was solved.

I have a 4G. Part of the reason why I brought the iPod is so that I can use it like an external harddrive to store all my songs ONLY on my iPod, and clear space of my computer.
Bites.

relying on a single hard drive as a sole method of storage is quite stupid - you are better off to spend $60 and get an internal HD and back everything up there, using your ipod as a secondary.
hard drives are miles less than perfect.

.... also relying on an IPOD harddrive as your storage is bad also. They arent built for that sort of constant heavy use...
