i like smpl's site.
we like to think in black and white terms (good/bad design) when it comes to "measuring results" because that's what we're trained to do. and when it comes to being hired to achieve some sort of result, that training is indespensible.
BUT: denying that there is a gigantic grey area is silly.
for example, I have a partner that i work with to develop record covers, exhibition monographs, posters, and such. and the main criteria is that it be "fucked". we develop a peice and then ask, "is this fucked?" if it's too clear, or understandable, then it won't work. Peaople come to expect the work to be fucked, they buy it because it's fucked, and his career depeds on making sure that his work is fucked.
it's the best work i've ever done.
so there's your "purposefully bad" for you.
