it was pretty mediocre. I kept waiting for something more in character development or story, and it never came. All the characters seemed bored and the story was crap. Just a big ole pile of stylized flash in the pan crap. Bill Murray's deadpan can only go so far.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't care for it. Though it had some really clever product placement, altogether I'm really tired of the "ironic" genre.

In the movie's defense though, I wasn't on any kind of drugs whatsoever. Had I smoked or popped a Vicoden before hand, I'm sure it would have been great.

I liked the characters. I think the artifice and the contrivance are all part of the humor . You can't tell me it didn't break your heart when Ned called Steve 'Stevesy' when he was dying.

This film lacked character development, good editing, and some solid writing. I think Anderson missed the mark this time.
Rushmore and Royal were so perfect in their execution overall—Life Aquatic just tried the same formula but somehow missed the critical elements...

I'm with swollenelbow on this, I've got the screener on my computer and I've watched it 3 or 4 times now. The film gets funnier and funnier everytime I watch it. The comedy is in the little details for sure.
The guitarist's name is Seu Jorge and he's got 5 songs on the soundtrack, awesome stuff.

I just saw it too. I loved the animation of the underwater species and the Portuguese Bowie songs were fantastic.
I couldn't wait to hear him translate bippity boppity in Queen Bitch.
I didn't like Bill Murray's character and it disturbed me that people were going along with his insanity that was obviously going to get people killed.

i agree. i just watched willem defoe in the last temptation of christ. fucking amazing. he is a great actor.
and this movie was a big step for wes, it is his style, but he is pushing more and i cant wait to see his next movie.

I actually wasn't sure if I wanted to see it and glad that someone put up this thread about the movie so I can hear rea people's crits about the movie. And maybe I will enjoy it more because I am on vicadine... got all 4 of my wisdom theeth out the other day and have nothing to do. I thought of going to see it in a few minutes but being in bed and at the computer souded better at this hour.
