i read once that to maintain creativity one should not attend art school. I think the list was:
1. dont go to art school
2. don't move to new york
3. if you do move to new york, dont get a loft apartment

read, read, read.
and learn to criticize everything, including yourself. it's a good way to learn and stay focused.

thanks for the help btw

get yourself some classics on the subject:

open up some programs and get started
recreate designs that you like. but mostly, just get to it.
choose colors palettes that you like.
choose font faces that you like.
buy a book on basic design principles.
sketch thumbnails of many possible layouts before getting on the computer.
look at print, cmyk, how, baseline and other design magazines constantly.
read books on how to develop a design theme and concept.
post your designs here and have them critiqued.

oh. and scatterbrain. you'll need to become a perfectionist as well.

I agree, you don't need to go to a university to be a good designer - just have a passion for it. Pick the programs you wanna be a pro in and hang out with people that do that stuff for a living. Also, drink lots of coffee. Stay true to your own unique style with your work. And don't let it discourage you if people say your designs suck.. I can go on and on..

ahah _salisae_!
also, rip other's people work. they like it.

use the find button - seach for books.
a designer has to be very resourceful.
if you can't find any i'll compile a list. but as your first assignment - try to locate some on your own.
another thing - you'll have to develop thick skin. just an aside.

i sense sarcasm there

i recently got this one, it's a must have:

Though a little pricey, I love the Japanese design magazine "IDEA" - always fresh styles in there..

find out what 'bit' of design interests you the most... do you want to work with print? online?..etc. choose one and stick with it, learn everything you can about it.
learn to generate ideas.
learn how to write/draw these ideas.
design theory is all well and good but remember it's someone else's theory, find your own.
looking at other peoples work is all well and good but remember it's gonna lead you into alot of dead ends.
whoever said 'copy someone else's designs' is wasting your time.
don't touch a computer until you are ready, it's a ball an chain and not the 'solution'.
..and above all, have fun.

scatterbrian, don't take this as an afront, but what got you interested in design?

please! not more one man to lensflare!!
search stuff, and nourish your resources. here's one of mine:
