open up some programs and get started
recreate designs that you like. but mostly, just get to it.
choose colors palettes that you like.
choose font faces that you like.
buy a book on basic design principles.
sketch thumbnails of many possible layouts before getting on the computer.
look at print, cmyk, how, baseline and other design magazines constantly.
read books on how to develop a design theme and concept.
post your designs here and have them critiqued.
