64 Bit Processors?

Hey guys... I have a question about the 64 bit processors. Can with the understanding that XP-64 is coming out soon, can I still run my copy of Windows XP with it? What precautions should I take since I plan on building a new computer soon. What type of motherboards? Does intel have a 64 bit processor as good or better than the AMD? I've always swayed towards the Intel chip since previous chips have been more reliable for me.

i would say amd all the way....but that's just me. i'm not sure about xp-64, sorry. let me do some checking...

amd64's are superior to intel, if you ask me. but, then again i hate intel products/chipsets and believe tinkertoys configured into a turing machine make a better processor than intel.
but i digress...
64-bit processors have two modes, 'long' and 'legacy' mode.
legacy allows 16/32 bit architectures to run on 64 chips with the loss of the '64' part. so, really there isn't much point.
'long' requires a 64 bit operating system.
i wouldn't waste money on a windows os for 64-bit processors. hell, i don't waste my money on a windows os anyway. i only run linux on my workstations and laptops.

the 64 bit chip. you should buy AMD 64bit over intel becacuse intels 64bit chip intanium is for servers so its $$$ thehy don't have a 64bit cpu targeted at normal users yet that s 32 bit compatiable...but u don't need 64 bit cpu windows isn't 64bit yet unless u wanna be prepared or run linux.

there is a 64bit version of XP coming out soon in 2005 there is a beta out... the chip is 32 bit compatiable anyway so u can run all your shit....and have 16g or ram....but id wait till longhorn comes out till i buy a 64 bit cpu so id go with a intel 4 ghz ...........

it's apparent that mevsthem is not using a 64 bit chip yet, since his computer takes so long to refresh thus ending in triple post action.
haha, just kidding : )

if you really want 64 bit processor power, buy a mac.
:)
at least then you're working in a real os (bsd).

Only double ;)

hehehe, i like AMD i plan to get a AMD64 bit chip but don't see the need untill longhorn, but thats just me, if you plan to ugrade again in 2006 then buy a p4 or a amd thats like it but only 32bit. now and get the 64bit chip later your gonna be spending alot more for a 64bit chip and the specs for longhorn are gonna needy. So like i said....Intel sells 64bit chips but for servers so they $$$$$ so your only choice really is AMD 64 if u plan to go 64 now...but i wouldn't recommand it till longhorn comes out cause specs will be needy and arn't 100% known at the moment.
