i've never heard of this - what type of resin?
- -leah-0
i think a clear resin of some sort
(not the resin you find at the bottom of a hash pipe :P)

ahahaha... jesus.... this sparked my interest for a moment... be careful with your word choices ;)

Leah, use Super Sculpey... you can get it at most craft stores and after you cook it in the oven it turns rock hard.
Easily paint and varnish.Hope that helps.

i prefer Fimo over Scupley

i want to take a photo (for example) mount it on a metal backing, then cover it in clear resin so you can see the image underneith... does that make sense? i don't think they make clear sculpey or fimo do they?

i have used stuff from here before:
http://www.resin-supplies.co.uk/…
but some is not appropriate for very small casting - i think you will need an epoxy one
basically if you google 'casting resins' you will get what you want
i haven't made anything small, i just made some doorknobs for my kids and stuff like that
you do get jewelry moulds though which are like trays with loads of dents in
hope that helps

also , watch out for the content of the resins if you are putting stuff like that in - test first as some use a peroxide in the hardener which then bleaches various things

thanks blindpilot! :)

if you plan to work with flat surfaces, think about using acrylic. sounds like you want to just mount a photo to the back of a clear piece of acrylic if im understanding you .. ?
i have loads of experience with resin if you need more advice....

i would like to form a bubble out of resin on top of the photo, it is hard to explain but if you go to http://www.naughtysecretaryclub.… and click on the resin products that is what i mean...

if you wish to reuse your mold and make a lot of them, it will be a pain and cost ~$10-50 for supplies.. if you are serious about it i can tell you how. have you worked with moldmaking before?

when i was in high school (8 years ago) i took some silversmithing classes, so i have a general idea on mold making plus i have taken many sculpture classes. i think i have an ok foundation, i would just need to refine my skills.
how messy is using resin? would i need to find somewhere other than my apartment to create with it?

epoxy resin is very poisonous to breathe..unless you are into that sort of thing. if not, be sure to use a respirator (not dust mask).
you will also need silicon rtv to mold with.
- make your part (pendant or whatever) and primer it and sand it smooth or whatever finish you desire (sandblasted, polished, etc).
-buy platinum rtv (blue) - other kinds react to resins.
-buy casting resin, lower grades can turn yellow or not be clear. epoxy is good bet but not cheap.
-build styrene box to put part in, suspended on a stick or whatever
- pour rtv around it, making sure to tap bubbles out. thats the hard part.
- sit for 24hrs
- peel away styrene, make thin cut w/x-acto and remove part
- mix + catalyse resin, pour into mold
-in your case, you can insert photo into mold before casting resin.
-hope that resin does not react to the material you put in
-remove casted piece and sand as neccessary.
ask the guy you buy rtv from how many parts you can do from one mold. i forgot the specs.

wow thanks superbaka! :D sounds intense but i really want to do it.

i'd recommend not to do it at your apartment. it stinks really really bad. when i did it, the smell stayed for a few days and i had a aweful headache.

silpak in hollywood has everything, despite a crappy webpage.
they make something called 'fast cast' which is solid white but hardens in 5 min! used for testing. i recommend it.
also, if you over catalyze the resin, it can literally burst into flames. the smoke it gives off is cancer-causing.
