Hey, just a question about physical portofolios u take with u to interviews. Do they have to be a certain size/dimension? what if you printed them 8 x 11.5 full color on kodak paper, would that be alright? (printing's costing an arm and a leg)

thats 8.5 x 11!

i think that's a good size. you don't want to be carrying in some jumbo nerd portfolio case into interviews anyway : )

do they actually sell portfolio cases for 8.5 x 11s or do u have to use soemthing like a photo album?

It really depends, there is no standard size. Also depends on how much experience you have. When you're starting out or only a couple years into it, it's always best to have the detail in your work show. Things like how well/poor your typesetting is don't show very well, when presented small. When you're more established
it's more of a given that your skills are sharp and you can get away with a small book.
Are you mainly print or web?

i've got the nerd size 13x19, but i have a lot of poster work. i keep my book in a brushed aluminum case so it doesn't get dinged up. saved me many times when i travelled to interviews by train.

Those brushed aluminum cases are nice...

"i've got the nerd size 13x19, ..."
haha, just joking. that's actually the same size i got : )

regarding quality on prints. just say 'I am not rich yet' or something and the interviewer won't mind lower quality prints. But of course the better quality the better impression.

I got a sweet as portfolio from Prat Paris. Black leather A3 size. The best sleeves. I think it's originally a photographers portfolio.

I got a portfolio for 11x14 size, it's leather on the outside, I actually think it is for copywriters, I saw one copywriter carry the same one.
I printed my stuff on 11x17 and then trimmed to fit 11x14.
When I started out I had a real cheap plastic portfolio with 8.5x11 printed with a bubblejet. I think interviewers are aware that the folio is based on years of experience.

do not, i repeat do no use 8.5 x 11!!!!!! from what ive been told employers do not want to see that standard. personally im putting mine on 14 x 14 sqaures if i can, its just kinda seperates it from the daily norm. but ohhh i do love the brush cases, i want to install a dvd screen in my to show off motion graphics

got mine from pina zangaro. got a stainless steel lazer cut of my logo and placed it on the cover. Was a bitch supergluing it cleanly, but i pulled it off.
oh i remember it fell off during a portfolio showcase at my school when someone fiddled with it.
IMO, size is not too big of a factor, as long as it's not ridiculously small. Be more concerned about how you can make it stand out. Most important is what's inside. Good luck.

fuckin' a you're right.
i guess that solves my next question...
teak or perfed aluminum?

I always make my own book (not typically the standard 8.5x11, but definitely small). I think a handmade portfolio says something about the designer, beyond the showcased projects.
